Description
Literacy for Life is an independent 501(c)3 organization that serves the greater Williamsburg community by offering adult literacy programs. Literacy for Life operates out of the William & Mary School of Education.
Literacy for Life's tutors and other volunteers are the heart of the program. They provide:
- One-on-one and small group instruction in reading, writing, math, and spoken English
- Help with special events
- Assistance with fundraising
- Administrative support
Tutoring is a rewarding and life-enhancing experience. Previous teaching experience is not required, nor is another language. New tutors complete six hours of training before tutoring, with an additional three-hour session two weeks later. Frequent in-service workshops are offered throughout the year. Tutors can enhance their skills by attending workshops, utilizing on-line training modules, using the resource library and computer-assisted learning lab, and receiving staff support.
