Assist in COLORS Clothing Store (WFDC) - Cornerstone Community

Make a difference in the lives of Houston's homeless single women and families at the Cornerstone Community Women & Family Development Center!

Many clients arrive at Star of Hope with nothing more than the clothes they are wearing. Volunteers are needed to assist clients as they select clothing for themselves and their children; organize new items; and keep the clothing room tidy.

Monday through Friday shifts are available between 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM. Saturday shifts are available from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Assist with Meals (MDC) - Men's Development Center

We serve three meals a day, 365-days per year, at all three facilities.  What an opportunity to encourage and uplift as you hand meal trays to our clients.  Individual volunteers or small groups are scheduled on an ongoing or one-time basis.  Volunteers help set-up - which may include tasks such as prepping veggies, making sack lunches or organizing the pantry - serve and clean-up. 

The maximum number of volunteers per meal is six.

Shifts available throughout the week.  Ending times are approximate:
     Breakfast: 6:30 AM - 8:30 AM
     Lunch:  11 AM - 1:30 PM
     Dinner:  4 PM - 6:30 PM

All volunteers must be in high school or older.  Students must be accompanied by an adult throughout the entire project.

Assist with Resident Services (WFDC) - Cornerstone Community

For volunteers who like to be in the center of action, Resident Services is the perfect place for you! Resident Services volunteers relish a wide variety of tasks - handing out supplies; assisting with meal times; distributing sack lunches' setting-up and tearing-down for chapel; setting-up mats and linens for overnight guests; washing and folding linens; assisting the receptionist; printing out directions and bus routes; charging cell phones; and so much more.

Daily shifts available for two to four hour shifts between the times of 6 AM and 9 PM.

Babysit Children (WFDC) - Cornerstone Community

Make a difference in the lives of Houston's homeless single women & families at the Women & Family Development Center at Star of Hope's Cornerstone Community - 2575 Reed Rd., Houston, TX 77051!

Do you love children & have lots of energy to share? Babysitters are needed so our young moms can attend programs geared to their special needs without worry or distraction. Volunteers look forward to this special time as our little ones melt your hearts with their beautiful smiles, inquisitive minds, & joyful laughter. Volunteers are welcome to choose from our large selection of activities or plan their own activities for the children. Individuals or small groups of 3 - 5 volunteers.

This opportunity is available on Tuesdays from 6/6:30 PM - 8 PM.

Tutor GED students (MDC) - Men's Development Center

Before the residents of Star of Hope can begin studying for their GED, some of them must get back to the basics!

This class meets Wednesdays from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM and the volunteer is asked to commit to serving weekly. Currently, we are in need of one volunteer to tutor in Social Studies and English.

Tutor Youth for Academic Development - Cornerstone Community

The Youth Academic Development Program seeks tutors for teens beginning in October to assist students with reading, math and homework. Individual volunteers are asked to commit to either a Monday or Tuesday evening from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM for an entire semester.

Reading Room volunteers will be assigned a group of students with similar reading levels. Volunteers will use a variety of tools to help students increase their reading skills and comprehension.

Math Room volunteers will review a basic math skill each week, such as multiplication and long division.

Homework Room volunteers will specifically help students with homework assignments.

In each of these areas, creative, flexible and faithful volunteers are necessary to help the students achieve academic success!
