High Priority: Neonatal Nurse or MD - Sierra Leone


Project HOPE is looking for experienced neonatal nurses or medical doctors preferably with experience of neonatal care in developing country settings to support its assistance especially to a Special Newborn Care Unit of Ola During Children's Hospital located in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Nurses and medical doctors with experience in training and mentorship are highly valued.

Accommodation and Volunteer Information:
Project HOPE will cover costs for roundtrip airfare, accommodations, meals, and ground transportation.

Multiple months preferred ranging 1-4 months


Additional Information:
Goal: Train and mentor the Special Care Newborn Unit staff on state-of-the-art newborn emergency care, care of the small baby, and care of the sick baby in low-resource, inadequate space, poorly staffed and equipped hospital environments.

1. Assess nursing skills in providing newborn/small baby care/sick baby care according to the Skills Checklist and provide skills update training as needed.
2. Assess the adequacy/quality of dedicated nursing staff to manage the Unit 24/7 and make recommendations to the hospital Sr. Management Team.
3. Assess the capacity of nursing staff to recognize danger signs, make correct judgments, and take action. Reinforce correct action as needed.
4. Assess current neonatal equipment usage by staff and provide training on essential equipment use as needed.
5. Provide bedside mentoring to the nursing staff as needed to improve areas of poor quality of mother/newborn care (STS, feeding, weighing, documentation, and infection control, admission/discharge), including Respectful Care.
6. Provide recommendations and follow-up actions regarding SCNU practice, admission/discharge/referral, infection control, and environment, and staffing to the hospital senior management.
7. Provide support to the Project HOPE Newborn Technical Coordinator as she mentors and trains staff in the KMC Units.

Reporting: Bi-weekly reports on training/mentoring activities, challenges, and recommendations.
